radiators vs electric underfloor heating for stone/porcelain tiled flooring?
Im thinking of getting a tiled floor for the ground floor of my house, however, wet underfloor heating is too expensive. Ive given myself 2 options, either use radiators, or electric underfloor heating. id rather have radiators coz the bills wont be as high, however will the floor still be cold?! thanks!
Most electric tile heating systems are not designed as a primary source of room heating. Therefore you would need a supplemental system. They also require a ton of juice if you are running them on a concrete slab. Most installation manuals require you to insulate with rigid foam at the perimeter of the area you are heating, which is difficult to retrofit. I installed some electric tile heating in a basement bathroom that had supplemental heat, but without the perimeter insulation, and it could only get the floor to about 50 degrees.
So you do have two options, but they are not what you thought:
1.) Install hot water radiant heat only
2.) Install hot water radiant heat and in floor electric heat
The electric floor will run off of a thermostat, but on a concrete slab it will pretty much run indefinitely, so you will be spending a lot on the electricity as well.
