which woodworking router should I buy? milwuakee, porter cable, etc. is it a must to have variable speed?

selection and features are determined by what you intend to do with it.
hand-held, or mounted in a table. personally, I think Porter-Cable, Bosch, Makita make the best routers. I wouldn't go lower than 1-1/2HP. Consider plunge capability for mortising, dado, ability to use 1/2" shank(larger, heavy duty) bits. A fixed base router is for edging, flush trimming where you don't need plunge feature. a built in light is good for free-hand work, worthless for table mounted as is a laser line. other features include micro-adjustability, ability to adjust from top of table, vacuum attachment.
The variable speed is used to slow down the router when using large diameter bits like for panel raising. would have little use for hand-held edge work.
