A Tool Battery using
Power on the power tool. With the power on, the tool functions as if it is connected to an electrical outlet. When you are not using the tool, make sure to turn the device off to increase the life of the battery.
Press down and hold the battery release button. This unlocks the battery from the tool. Pull the tool out to remove it from the device. This allows you to change in a fresh battery, if the current battery is spend.
Make sure your tool battery is charged, so place it in the charger for about half an hour. Remove it from the charger, once the battery is full.
Turn on your power tool and be prepared to be patient while the battery discharges. It's important you let the tool run continuously until it completely stops operating. During this time, the battery gets very warm: this assists the process of breaking down the cells. Turn off the tool once it stops operating.
Find a cordless power tool battery disposal and recycling center in your state. Enter your zip code and choose the nearest location.
Alternatively, recycle locally. Contact a replacement parts store in your town and inquire about recycling services. Drop off your cordless power tool batteries as directed.
Remove the battery from your cordless power tool. Cordless power tools vary by model type and manufacturer, so refer to your owner's manual for complete battery removal instructions.
Go to Call2Recycle's website, which belongs to The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation, a nationwide battery disposal organization.
All batteries lose their charge after periods of prolonged use, and power tool batteries are no exception. Power tool batteries are dry cell batteries, made mostly of alkaline and carbon zinc (9-volt, D, C, AA, AAA), mercuric-oxide (button, some cylindrical and rectangular), silver-oxide and zinc-air (button), and lithium (9-volt, C, AA, coin, button, rechargeable).
Instead of throwing your battery in the garbage, recycling offers an alternative that not only benefits the environment but perhaps your wallet as well. For example, in October 2009, power tool manufacturer DeWalt offered a $10 discount on new batteries in exchange for old batteries at DeWalt service centers. Check with other manufacturers for similar offers.
