How many drills does a tradesman need?
For most tradesmen a drill is an essential part of their power tool kit, and in many cases more than one type of drill is required to tackle specialist applications often encountered particularly in the construction and engineering industries.
Rotary Drills are basic drills often with two speeds and a variable speed option. The ability to change speed makes the tool more flexible in terms of the types of material it is able to drill effectively. Rotary Drills are commonly used to drill metal, wood, plastics and most materials where hammer action is not required.
Hammer Drills include the option to switch on hammer action making the drill suitable for drilling concrete and masonry. With the hammer action switched off these hammer drills can also drill wood, metal and plastics etc making them extremely versatile with most tradesmen including a hammer drill in their kit.
The key feature of SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer Drills & SDS-Max Rotary Hammer Drills is the use of a piston mechanism to deliver a very powerful blow to the drill bit as it rotates. This is much more powerful than a simple hammer drill and gives the tool the ability to drill much larger and deeper holes in materials like concrete and brick. The SDS name for these tools comes from the drill bit quick release mechanism which is designed to lock the drill bit into the tool securely which is essential in view of the powerful blows being delivered to the bit by the piston mechanism.
Many SDS-Plus and SDS-Max tools include a rotary stop feature which stops the tool turning while the hammer action continues to operate. This allows the use of a wide selection of chisels suitable for various applications likely to be encountered by tradesmen involved in construction.
There is also a range of drills which are designed for specific applications including angle drills which are basically rotary drills with an angle head to allow drilling in confined spaces. Diamond core drills run at a specific speed and have a clutch set to allow the operator to drill with diamond cores in some cases up to 6 inch diameter.
In recent years cordless power tool technology has made significant advances and most types of drill are now available in a cordless version giving tradesmen even more choice and flexibility.
Clearly the choice of drills available to tradesmen is wide and varied with no single tool able to cover the range of applications typically encountered particularly in the construction industry. On the other hand whatever the task there, is likely to be a drill ideally suited for that application which gets the job done quickly and efficiently which is vitally important to any tradesmen.
