The Craftsman 12. v rechargeable drill is a rebranded Skil. It was made by Skil and Sears put their name on it. As a safety feature, Craftsman chargers are designed to burn out if the battery heats over a set temperature.
Charging builds heat in the battery, the more amp hours the battery has, the hotter the battery gets. So if you buy a better battery with more mili-amp hours, so it last longer, it will burn out your charger when you try to charge it.
Better quality chargers like Dewalt or Makita have circuits in them that shut the charger down until the battery cools and then finishes charging.
Check the cross comparison charts and find a better brand compatable charger and get it so you can use any strength battery.
ps. there is an aftermarket repair kit for your charger. It will upgrade your charger so it will not burn out if you use a better battery with it. The aftermarket kit is easy to instal if you have a soldering gun.
