local bike shops are better, especially if you're going light trail and long distance. getting a bike at a local shop means they can fit you into it and you can get the kinds of components you want. I reccomend a hard tail (no back shock) they start way less than the full suspension ones. just get a hard tail with a front shock.
in the way of shocks, there are spring shocks and adjustable preload ones. either one will work, but the bonus of the preload is you can adjust how springy you want the shock to be- from loose to hard.
