DVI Plug / Adapter question?
Ive bought a DVI - HDMI adapter from ebay a few days ago, it arrived, but theres a problem. The HDMI side is male and the DVI side is female.
On the DVI side, i dont have enough holes to fit the monitor DVI cable into the female socket. There is 24 square holes on the left side of the adapter as well as the monitor cable, so thats ok, but on the right side of the adapter, there is only one long hole, and theres 4 holes missing around it. So, should i do the risky thing and drill a hole through the long pin socket to make space for the 4 other pin sockets around it, or is there an important connection in the long pin socket?
Please help me out quick!

What you have is a DVI-I cable. Go find whom ever sold that to you and strangle them with it. DVI-I cables are verboten and should never be made.
However, before you kill them, exchange the DVI-I cable for a DVI-D cable. The connector on the end of that will match your HDMI-DVI-D adapter perfectly.
Seriously, don't kill the person. It has nasty consequences for you. And possibly for me too! But please tell them that they should only stock DVI-D cables and DVI-A cables. A DVI-I cable should never be used. It will confuse the system as to whether it should be sending analog or digital signals and may end up having the system think that there are actually two monitors attached.
DVI-I has the connectors for both a DVI-D digital signal and a DVI-A analog signal. Hence the extra pins. Since HDMI = [single link DVI-D + HDCP encryption + Audio data] in a compact connector a HDMI to DVI adapter is really a HDMI to DVI-D adapter and is missing the analog pins seen in a DVI-I or DVI-A connector.
