Is this classed as child abuse or just a bit over the top as a punishment?

I don't have kids. i am asking this because my friend that's 12 says her mum slapped her round the face twice for swearing and I wondered if this is right. I know her mum quite well because she my mum best mate.

is it legal?

Many people are against slapping children as a punishment, whereas others feel it is justified. Swearing is not a nice thing for a 12 year old to be doing and there are other ways to punish your friend for doing this. However, perhaps your mums friend was slapped as a child so this is the way in which she chooses to punish her kids.

However, children can get injured from slapping, resulting in cuts and bruises. This can then become dangerous territory. It isn't abuse as such but there is a risk of physical harm, then it could be abuse.
