Has anyone ever used a grinder to trim horses' hooves?
The thought occurred to us when we used a Peticure to trim our dogs' nails. It worked great - rounded the edges and no pressure on the quick. We trim our horses ourselves, and it's an ordeal. My husband wondered if we could use a 4" electric grinder to round off the hooves o on our bomb proof horses.
I said I've never seen a farrier use any gadgets to trim other than the usual tools. I'd welcome comments. TIA
Hey guys, I don't mean grind the hoof to the bone. I meant smooth it with the grinder instead of using a rasp.
I actually know personally of a farrier that uses a grinder on the horses feet and she has been doing it for years with no adverse affects she has even done in on some of our weanlings. The smell is awful but it takes no time to get it done and they look great. i have also never seen or heard of any of her customers having complaints about the heat on the horses feet causing damage at all. In fact, she is great friends with a wonderful vet he actually will call her out to do his own horses feet but i do agree that if you dont know what you are doing you can damage something by slipping or whatever.
