Choosing the best drill for you

Where ever you live if you own you own home there will be a selection of tools that it is sensible to have available to you, a drill is first amongst this list, this way you can learn to use them and save a lot of time and money on calling out workmen or repair men for minor jobs around the house, most trades have a call out charge and if all you need them to do is fix something that takes them 15 minutes the call out charge will make it an extremely expensive job.

Most drills are readably available from DIY stores and a number of these shops offer training classes in how to use your new tool properly, it is not necessary to purchase a large number of drill bits and accessories or to spend a lot of money on them, a quality drill should if looked after properly will last you a good number of years.

Proper care of your drill is vital if you are going to get the best from it when you need it, I would always recommend you keep the drill in the case that it came supplied with when not in use as it is important you do not expose the drill to water and avoid dropping it, the drill cases I have are shock proof and so small knocks do not damage the drill inside.

As the drill will have several bits and attachments I would also recommend these are kept in an appropriate case along with the drill, counting the bits out and back in again should avoid loss while you work with them.

But why do I need a drill?

If all your drill did was make holes in plastic, metal and wood it would be a great tool to have around the house, however your drill can do so much more than that.

Drill bits are the main reason the drill is so versatile, changing one bit for another means you can quickly move from constructing a wooden shed in the garden to hanging a picture in your front room, all using the same drill but with just some adjustments in the power setting and the bits used.

Drills come in many shapes and sizes and they are not all built to do the same jobs, a small craft drill is not going to be the right tool for working with the outside wall of your house and so before you spend your money on the wrong tool for the job, stop and think about what it is you need your drill to do.

What went wrong with my CNC Lathe set up?

So I did 9 setups today and crashed 2 center drills. I have know Idea what is wrong with my set-up. The program starts. There is a M00 for indicating. I indicate. Next line there is a M00 for work shift. I make sure tool 4 offset 4 is up. I touch off my workshift, with the .100 block. I enter “offset measure” then MZ.100 The off set moved a little bit more then the last set up. So I enter in again. Numbers did not change. I try it again check that the tool and offset are up. Nothing has changed. I creep up on the part and it says distance to go 3.0 it looks like 3.0 its actually more but I cant tell by eye. I get close enough and let it run and Bam work shift was off one time by .050 and the 2nd time almost 2in. What did I do wrong if I know I set it correctly and am confident that I did.

Best bet is to ask senior man in the shop with the most experience on the machine. Off hand it sounds like the machine did not know where it was when started or your position sensor hardware or software is messed up. The jump on start up can be mechanical vibration messing up a contact or a loose mechanical part someplace. Until you can get it figured out, please tag the machine. People have been known to be hurt by broken bits.
Hint. Has anyone taken the machine apart recently and gotten cutting oil into a connector or into the circuit boards?
