Is there a way to tell the difference between a carbon steel tap and a high speed tap by looking at it?

When you hold a high speed tap and a carbon steel tap side by side, they look identical. They are sometimes etched with different codes such as (U)NC and NC. I have several of the same size, but I don't know which is carbon steel and which is high speed. Any help?

If you try a file (on the shank) of the tap you will find the carbon steel is harder than the high speed tap.
Just a light touch with the file should do the trick.
