How To Install Crown Molding
Crown molding is used to case out a room. When people are interested in crown molding they are normally looking for a way to draw off of a homes natural beauty or accent a certain wall. Crown molding is normally put at the top of the wall right below the ceiling to accentuate a particular wall. Many people will use crown molding on a wall that is a different color from the rest of the home, just to give it some flair.
It is not a necessity to have crown molding in your home, but it does create a different appearance of a particular room. Installing crown molding is not as easy as you may have speculated; it takes skill and patience to install crown molding. If you fall short of either one of these qualities, you may want to call in a professional from NJ home repair services to assist you.
If you still insist on installing the crown molding on your own, we have a few basic steps for you to follow that can benefit you in your task.
1. Buy a compound-miter saw- You will need to be able to cut wood at an angle, and ordinary saws do not have the ability to do so. No ceilings edges are set at a perfect 45 or 90 degree angle, therefore the miter saw comes in handy because it can cut the diagonal angles you will require for the corners of a room.
2. Buy extra molding- Ensuring that you have a little extra molding on hand will save time when it comes to errors. If you are not an experienced carpenter you can expect errors, especially when measuring the corners of a room.
3. Measure the length of the walls- Molding normally comes in 8, 12, or 16 foot sections. When you buy a little more then you need, you can ensure you will have the correct amount. For those of you, who are not handy with a tape measurer its better if you buy the 16 foot sections.
4. Know your basic hand tools- The tools you will need to complete the job are a hammer, and a box of finishing nails so the crown molding will stay on the wall.
5. Manipulate the corners- When installing crown molding you want to start from the corners and work your way down the wall. Measure out the distance of the corner and cut from there. If you’re like many who honestly do not know how to measure correctly, cut a small piece of wood off and mark your corner with a pencil. You may not get an exact measurement of the corner, but you’ll come close.
6. Nail the molding- Once you have correctly cut the angle of the ceiling to where the crown molding should lay. It’s time to nail it. It’s a good idea to place the nails about 12 inches apart from one another. This way you can stop any beveling that may take place once the house settles.
7. Caulk it and your done- Once you have set up your crown molding to your specifications, it’s a good idea to get some silicone caulk, and caulk the top of the molding so it appears flush with the ceiling.

What is the best crown molding for a narrow hallway?
The hallway is fairly long, has a low ceiling, and does have naturally lighting. Now I am having a hard time choosing the best crown molding. Should it be plain or decorative? Should it be crown or cove? I want the hallway to feel wider than it is and for the ceiling to seem as though it were high, or higher anyways. And of course the last thing I want is the opposite, for it to seem smaller. Also suggustions on size would be great. Thanks!
Adding crwon to an already low ceiling is not going to help make it appear higher. It will shrink the room. If you insist on putting it in, use the smallest profile (height-2 1/2 ") you can find. I, personally would not use cove, as it will not look acceptable.
