Probably the most frequently used tools that any woodworker is ever likely to buy is his miter saw, this is particularly true of a compound miter saw. Few things are more frustrating than trying to make a compound cut without one If you are a serious woodworker you really can't do without a compound miter saw. In order to be certain that you buy the perfect miter saw for your requirements there are a couple things that you are going to want to think about

Frequently there is a large difference in the price of miter saws. Usually the difference in cost is determined by the type of miter saw, the size and the quality. generally it is best to buy the best miter saw that your budget will allow, you will enjoy the advantages of having a good saw. It will help you avoid a lot of hassle and make your work a lot easier if you have a good quality miter saw. It is almost always a good investment.

Generally there are three different sizes of compound miter saw, 8, 10, and 12 inches. We are really taking about the size of the blade when we talk about the size of the miter saw. The larger the piece of wood that you want to cut the bigger the blade you will need. The eight inch saw is extremely limited when it comes to what it can do so even though there are three sizes of miter saw available only the larger two are worthy of serious consideration. Which means that you are going to have to decide between the ten and twelve inch miter saw. The diameter of the blade is normally the single largest factor in determining the price of a miter saw. The standard sizes are 8, 10, 12 inches with the two larger ones being much more common. In point of fact there is little reason to get an 8 inch miter saw since its cutting capacity is far too limited for it to be of any real value. The 10 inch compound miter saw is by far the most common since it can be purchased at a reasonable price and it meets the requirements of most people. A 10 inch blade can handle almost all of the cutting that all but the most serious woodworkers is likely to come across. A 12 inch miter saw will come with a pretty high price but they can handle pretty much anything. There may be some serious amateur woodworkers who need a twelve inch saw but normally only a professional carpenter is likely to need a saw this big.

Another major consideration is whether you need a standard miter saw, a compound miter saw or a sliding compound miter saw. The standard miter saw is so limited in what it can do that it is hardly worth buying since it is limited to cutting miters. The compound miter saw is significantly more capable because it can cut both miters and bevels. The benefit of a sliding compound miter saw is that after you lower the blade into the wood you can pull the saw through it; this allows you to cut pieces of wood that would otherwise be too large. As you go from the standard miter saw to the compound miter saw to the sliding compound miter saw the amount you pay increases of course. At a minimum you should probably choose a compound miter saw but this is largely a matter of personal preference.
